Background of the Study

The e-commerce industry has revolutionized the retail landscape, providing consumers with convenience and accessibility. Jumia Nigeria, a leading e-commerce platform, operates in a highly competitive and technology-driven environment. However, the reliance on digital platforms exposes e-commerce companies to cybersecurity risks such as data breaches, payment fraud, and unauthorized access (Ibrahim & Nwosu, 2023).

IT audits play a critical role in evaluating and strengthening IT systems, ensuring compliance with industry standards, and safeguarding customer data. An effective IT audit identifies gaps in security controls, enhances operational efficiency, and fosters trust among stakeholders (Okoro & Adamu, 2024). This study evaluates the effectiveness of IT audits in Jumia Nigeria, focusing on their role in addressing the unique challenges of the e-commerce sector.

Statement of the Problem

E-commerce companies face unique challenges, including handling sensitive customer information, managing high transaction volumes, and ensuring the reliability of digital platforms. Despite the adoption of IT audits, many e-commerce platforms in Nigeria, including Jumia Nigeria, experience issues such as data breaches and operational disruptions, raising concerns about the effectiveness of these audits (Adebayo & Salisu, 2025).

There is a need to critically evaluate IT audit practices in the e-commerce industry to determine their effectiveness in mitigating cybersecurity risks and enhancing operational performance. This study seeks to assess the effectiveness of IT audits in Jumia Nigeria and propose strategies for improvement.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the effectiveness of IT auditing practices in identifying risks in Jumia Nigeria.

  2. To assess the role of IT audits in enhancing data security and operational efficiency in Jumia Nigeria.

  3. To recommend improvements to IT audit practices for better risk management in the e-commerce sector.

Research Questions

  1. How effective are IT audits in identifying risks in Jumia Nigeria?

  2. What is the role of IT audits in enhancing data security and operational efficiency in Jumia Nigeria?

  3. What strategies can improve IT audit practices in the e-commerce sector?

Research Hypotheses

  1. IT audits effectively identify risks in Jumia Nigeria’s operations.

  2. IT audits significantly enhance data security and operational efficiency in Jumia Nigeria.

  3. Improved IT audit practices lead to better risk management in the e-commerce sector.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on IT audit practices in Jumia Nigeria, evaluating their effectiveness in risk identification and mitigation. Limitations may include restricted access to proprietary audit reports and limited generalizability of findings to smaller e-commerce platforms.
